Feeling worried?

We all have things on our minds that we worry about.

Whether it's ourselves; how we look, how we feel, how we're doing at school... or other people; our parents, brothers and sisters, other relatives or friends.

It's not unusual to be frightened of getting things wrong, of getting hurt or of losing someone or something you love. But these worries can leave us feeling lonely, fed up, sad or angry, making it hard to get on with life - and to enjoy being at school.

Talking can help

Whether your worries are big or small, it's always a good idea to share them with someone you trust - even if you feel there's little point; even if you feel embarrassed, or bad, or guilty, talking can help.

Talking can stop things building up inside your head and getting even worse. And it can help you find new and helpful ways of thinking about things.

You may have a mum or dad, or another relative you're happy to talk to - or friends that you trust. But there can still be times when you don't want to share your worries with any of these people. You may think they won't understand, that they'll get upset or tell other people your problem. Or you may just want to talk to someone else.

If that's the case, there are people whose job it is to listen - people like counsellors and mentors who help make sense of your problems and find ways of dealing with them.

Lots of children do this. You really don't have to face things on your own.

Need someone to talk to?

If you have The Place2Be in your school...
...ask your teachers or friends about ThePlace2Talk; a safe place within your school where you can come in your lunch break and talk to a professional who is able to listen and help. Most children find it really useful.

If you don't have The Place2Be in your school... ...there are helplines and websites with specially trained staff who will listen and help you find ways through your problems. They may also suggest other people in your area who you can go to for further help.

You don't have to say who you are, and some children prefer to talk on the telephone because they feel more private.
