The Place2Be funding model works on the basis of schools contributing up to 50% of the project costs. We then look to secure a further 25% of the funding through local authority sources such as education, health, CAMHS, regeneration and policing. The final 25% is generated through a consortium of children’s champions, which brings together contributions from corporate sponsors, private donors and grant making trusts.
Government funding, health sector and education sector
"I believe every Member of the House and every parent and grandparent in our country can agree: every child matters, and we all have a responsibility to ensure that every child has the chance to develop their talents to the full. Good mental health (or emotional or psychological well-being) is as important as physical health, and without it children and young people will not achieve the good outcomes Every Child Matters is designed to promote. [The way forward is for our] schools to work with mental health practitioners and others to improve the emotional well-being of pupils." - Ed Balls, the new Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, speaking on 10 July 2007
Since becoming a charity in 1994, The Place2Be has been recognised as a model of good practise within the voluntary sector. Over the years, we have received financial support from the Government departments for Health and Education & Skills, as well as from a variety of statutory bodies and agencies, including The Treasury, The Home Office, Section 64, The Scottish Executive, Lothian Health, The Children's Fund, The Parenting Fund, Neighbourhood Renewal Fund, The Big Lottery, One Nottingham, Extended Schools, Behaviour Improvement Programme, and Excellence in Cities, as well as from Local Education Authorities, Primary Care Trusts and CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services), as well as the more recent Local Strategic Partnerships with their complex commissioning processes.
Currently, all of our Hubs are funded in part through local statutory sources (like The Children's Fund), which each have their own rigorous application, monitoring and evaluation systems. However, the fast-changing nature of these agencies makes long-term sustainability an on-going challenge. Whilst many of our services reflect Government policy on children's welfare (in particular, Every Child Matters; Change for Children), we are determined to retain our independence by working with a variety of funders.
Charitable Trusts and Foundations
At The Place2Be, we're fortunate to have been supported by a number of leading charitable trusts and foundations, including: City Bridge Trust, Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Garfield Weston Foundation, John Ellerman Foundation, John Laing Foundation, the Mercers' Company, Moffat Charitable Trust, Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Pilgrim Trust, the Henry Smith Charity and Zurich Community Trust. Many funders are keen to see our work at first-hand, so we make a point of arranging project visits throughout the year. Feedback is always positive, because nothing compares to seeing your ‘investment' brought to life in the real world.
One of The Place2Be's greatest strengths is our commitment to ensuring quality through rigorous monitoring and evaluation. This enables us to provide timely and informative reports to our funders, keeping them closely involved at every step.

Schools
The Place2Be delivers much-needed services in a cost-effective way. All schools are expected to make a contribution – usually around 50% of the project costs - to demonstrate their commitment. We support all partner schools to secure matched funding. Plus each Hub is further supported by a Steering Group, typically comprising representatives from each school, The Place2Be, key local funders and voluntary and statutory agencies. The Steering Group works to promote the quality and sustainability of services across all Hub schools and to make sure that the most effective support is provided to the children and their families.
Delivering best value
When you consider that £3,000 to £6,000 is lost from a mainstream school’s budget[1] for every child who is excluded, it’s possible that a school can end up financially better off by investing in The Place2Be.
In a recent ‘Best Value’ review of our work, we compared the cost of The Place2Be services with places in a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU). Although these places are limited, a PRU is still the most likely destination for a child excluded from mainstream education – at a cost of £13,000 per place, per year[2]. Plus it is suggested that each excluded pupil can cost society £450,000 over his or her lifetime.[3] If access to The Place2Be services can prevent just one child in a school from being excluded or enrolled in a PRU, then the benefit to the Local Education Authority could be as much as £13,000 – or £130,000 in a Hub of 10 schools.
How can we help?
Any Local Authority that is thinking about building a new PRU could make substantial capital and revenue savings by working with The Place2Be.
If you would like to know more about supporting pupils facing possible exclusion, and the suite of services we offer to schools, please call Anna on 020 7923 5506.

Supporting The Place2Be means helping children now, whilst also giving them the prospect of a better future. It’s a gift for today and for tomorrow; for individual children and the world they will occupy. That’s why ‘In Memoriam’ giving is such a powerful way to pay tribute to a loved one who cared about children, whilst legacies can ensure that your own beliefs and values live on through our work.
In Memoriam gifts – remembering someone specialYou can make a donation of any amount in memory of a loved one. All In Memoriam gifts are recorded in a special commemorative book, along with your message of remembrance. The donation itself goes directly to our work with children.
Legacies – remembering The Place2Be in your WillNaturally, most people’s priority in making a Will is to provide for their family and friends. But having done this, you may also wish to leave a gift to a charity whose work you believe in.
At The Place2Be, we know that leaving a legacy is a very big step and - regardless of the amount - we always consider gifts in Wills as very special.
If you would like to know more about In Memoriam gifts and legacies, please call us on 020 7923 5521. We’ll be happy to talk things through in greater detail – and in confidence. Alternatively, you can reach us via
legacies@theplace2be.org.ukPayroll giving
Payroll Giving is a tax-efficient way of donating money directly from your wages. As the money you give comes out of your salary before tax, a typical £10 gift actually costs you just £7.80 (the additional £2.20 being made-up of money you would otherwise have paid in tax).
As a first step, please talk to someone in your payroll or finance department. If your company doesn’t yet have a Payroll Giving scheme, they can set one up quickly and easily.
